New in Askiaface for iOS

We’re pleased to announce that we have released a major update to askiaface for iOS on the App Store; version 3.3.0 is jam-packed with exciting new features and many dead bugs:

Askiafield 5.4 quota management

With askiafield 5.4, we have implemented four new Quota keywords which will dramatically simplify the setting of your surveys when you want balanced or least filled quota.

  1. AvailableQuota: returns the indexes of the responses of the TargetQuestion still available (to do > 0) and sorted from the max to do to the min to do using the count for the sort.
  2. AvailableBalancedQuotas:  returns the indexes of the responses of the TargetQuestion still available (to do > 0) and sorted from the max to the min using the following formula : (Target% - Observed%) / Target%
  3. QuotaList: returns the complete indexes of the responses of the TargetQuestion sorted from the max to do to the min to do using the count for the sort.
  4. BalancedQuotaList: returns the complete indexes of the responses of the TargetQuestion sorted from the max to the min using the following formula: (Target% - Observed%)

Askiafield 5.3.5 quota management

We’ve finally added support  for manual quota management! You can now design your mobile Askia surveys while leveraging the usefulness of such keywords as QuotaToDo, MaxQuotaToDo and other IsQuotaFullFor in order to better apply your quota methodology within your questionnaires!

Added Crashlytics support

We have integrated the Crashlytics engine in order to improve our error logging. Crashlytics allows us to able to locate, down to the exact line of code, any issue that causes application instabilities. This will greatly improve our response time and efficiency when dealing with pesky bugs!

New 5.4 AskiaScript

We have added support for askiadesign’s 5.4 AskiaScript! You can now make use of many new goodies such as:

  • Run Askia Script: with this action, it is now possible to run a script to complete multiple actions in one go. These are the new methods for question objects.
  • HasParentChapter: Check whether the question has a parent chapter
  • ParentChapter: Will return a string containing name of the Parent chapter
  • AgentID: Identifier of the interviewing Agent
  • AgentName: Name of the interviewing Agent
  • EndTime: Indicates the finished date/time of the current interview
  • StartTime: Indicates the started date/time of the current interview
  • Language: Returns the current respondent language
  • Scenario: Returns the current respondent scenario
  • and many more!

Improved memory management

The application has been completely transitioned to Automatic Reference Counting (ARC) in order to better memory management. Simply put, this allows askiaface for iOS to improve the way it allocates and deallocates objects automatically without obliging our developers from manually releasing unused or obsolete objects from memory.

For you, this will translate in a smoother and snappier experience! Win :)

Miscellaneous fixes

We have also took the time to fix some issues some of our users were experiencing:

  • Fixed various issues with routings
  • Fixed issue with ADCs not rendering
  • Fixed issue when syncing interviews with quota data
  • Fixed an issue with AWS resource upload
  • Fixed a memory leak when syncing interviews with AWS resources
  • Fixed an issue where interview description was no longer displayed in Modify interviews
  • Fixed missing interview date in Modify interviews
  • Fixed an issue that would prevent the interview file name to be displayed when Askiaface Description was missing

Askiaface for iOS 3.2.0

Today, we released askiaface for iOS 3.2.0 on the App Store. This update includes the following new features:

  • Kiosque mode for iPad
  • Schedule daily survey data sync

Kiosque mode

This new feature allows you to setup an askiaface for iOS (for iPad only) questionnaire as a Kiosque survey. A Kiosque survey enables you to provide a self-interviewing environment with the following:

  • Loop interviews: as soon as the current interview is completed, a new one is automatically generated and displayed on the tablet.
  • Secured kiosque mode: users can only exit Kiosque mode after providing the per Askiafield server password.
  • Inactive kiosque interview management: if no activity is detected on an in-progress Kiosque interview for at least x minutes, the application will abandon that interview and generate a new one. Of course, you decide on a per server basis the duration of the timeout.

Disclaimer: Kiosque mode is currently offered as a freely accessible trial. Access to this feature will be subject to specific licensing.

Schedule daily sync

To accompany the above new Kiosque mode, we’ve added the possibility to schedule daily survey data syncing.

This will allow you to synchronise all your survey data without having to operate each Kiosque devices. Even though this feature is only available on devices on which at least one Kiosque survey has been setup, it will sync data (interviews as well as questionnaire updates) for all available surveys on the device.

Access the Schedule Daily sync in the app’s sidebar and set the time of day to trigger the synchronisation. You’ll of course be able to deactivate feature when you no longer need it by simply toggling the Daily Sync switch.

Miscellaneous

As usual, we have also fixed some issues:

  • Various fixes on issues with keyboard input in the Settings view.
  • Fixed a performance issue in the app views.

This update is already available via the App Store and will soon be available on your favourite Android devices!

Askiaface for iOS 3.1.1 released!

We are pleased to announce that we have just released an update to askiaface for iOS: version 3.1.1. This update includes the following improvements and fixes:

  • Updated Base SDK to iOS 9.3
  • Added Remove survey feature
  • Integrated UI for remove survey feature
  • Added specific warning when deleting a survey with / without interviews
  • Fix when resuming interview on a preliminary selection loops
  • Fix on response blocks that contain MS Word’s `…` special character

Delete survey

The main feature, Delete survey, allows you to remove an available survey from the list of questionnaires:

If ever you remove a survey for which you still have complete and/or incomplete interviews that have not been synced back to the askiafield server, the iOS app will warn you and require you synchronise your data before removing the survey:

Once all local interviews for that survey have been synced, you can delete the survey:

Base SDK updated

We have updated the base SDK used to build askiaface for iOS to version 9.3 (the latest available) in order to benefit from various performance improvements and fixes. The application now supports devices running iOS 8+, iOS 7.x is no longer supported.

This update is available directly from the App Store so head there to get the update!

Askiaface for iOS updated to version 3.0.12

An update to askiaface for iOS is now available on the App Store. This minor update provides the following changes:

  • Fixes an issue with certain ADCs displaying incorrect characters when non-latin languages were used
  • Fixes an issue with resources not displayed in certain conditions (seems like we’ve finally got that one, sorry about it!)
  • Full for support version 5.3.5 scripts and keywords

We’ve also added some goodies in preparation for the next update; among which: resource uploads to Amazon Web Services and support for Askiaface Description, so stay tuned for that!

Ways in which DemoSCOPE is harnessing the power of Askia software

We’re always eager to share news about ways in which our software is being used around the globe and here is an example from a Swiss customer, DemoSCOPE.

By way of a brief introduction, DemoSCOPE, a user of Askia software since 2010, is Switzerland’s largest owner-managed market research company. Established as a one-man business in 1961, DemoSCOPE today employs around 60 permanent staff as well as several hundred freelancers.

To continue with the theme of the article, DemoSCOPE has recently completed a project for the Swiss Federal Statistical Office (FSO) and is about to start another one, with different Askia data collection products central to each.

Firstly, the project which has just ended saw around 100,000 CAPI interviews collected for the national traffic survey “Transalpine and cross-border passenger transport 2015”. Interviews were conducted at all road and rail borders and alpine crossings using the Askiaface app for iOS and Android on smartphones. For road transport, cars were stopped and drivers interviewed; for rail transport, passengers were interviewed on the trains.

Secondly, DemoSCOPE won a multi-year contract with the same organization earlier this year, offering a solution for a support hotline and interviews as part of the Swiss census system. Around 30,000 support calls and e-mails will be handled by DemoSCOPE through their Askia inbound platform, a ticketing system and an external application from the Federal Office of Information Technology, Systems and Telecommunication (FOITT).

Stefan Klug, DemoSCOPE’s Head of Operations said, “both projects were only able to be offered and won with the latest Askia CAPI and CATI software in place. CAPI on Android and iOS has great advantages when running such large-scale projects.” Stefan then went on to mention that Askia’s integrated inbound telephony solution is a real USP for DemoSCOPE. “Having proposed and integrated CATI inbound into all of our bigger CATI projects for several years now has enabled us to create a new industry standard for CATI research in Switzerland” he added.

Askiafield: Survey XML file is corrupt

Askiaface for iOS & Android make use of the XML version of the .QEX file; it sometimes occurs that certain characters (trailing spaces, &, >, <, …) will cause the survey’s XML definition to be invalid.
